Arsht Center Launches “Heart Of Art”

Covid-19 Commissioning Fund

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County announces the launch of Heart of Art, the first online commissioning program in Miami-Dade County created to inspire new performing arts work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Using video as the virtual stage, 20 Miami-based performing artists will each be awarded $1,000 to create new works of dance, music, theater, spoken word and other performing arts that capture our community’s unique voice and experience during this unprecedented crisis. The new video works will be showcased on the Arsht Center’s website at Arshtcenter.org and promoted across the Center’s social media platforms and [email protected] e-newsletter.

Heart of Art is launched with the generous support of TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank.

“Through this first-of-its-kind project, the Arsht Center seeks to engage and connect people from every corner of our Miami community through artistic expression and inspiring cultural experiences, which are needed more than ever in this time of isolation,” said Johann Zietsman, Arsht Center president and CEO. “The arts can heal, unite, provide much-needed escape and help us process what is happening. It is important that we support artists in their greatest time of need and encourage them to keep creating.”

“COVID-19 has created unprecedented challenges for everyone in our community, but it is important that we stay connected to one another and build an inclusive future,” said Nick Miceli, Metro Florida regional president for TD Bank and a new member of the Adrienne Arsht Center Foundation Board of Directors. “Throughout history the arts have helped us find our voice and feel a sense of belonging. We need that more than ever.”

Heart of Art commissions will be awarded on a rolling basis. Artists are invited to submit two-minute video proposals, with the first round of proposals due by June 8, 2020. Artists working across all genres of the performing arts are encouraged to apply, including music, theater, dance, spoken word, monologues or multi-genre combinations. Because Heart of Art is intended to create an artistic time capsule of Miami’s pandemic experience, the program is open exclusively to artists who reside in Miami-Dade County. The work must represent the Miami experience and address the subject of “art in the time of coronavirus” through the artist’s unique creative lens. Artists selected for the $1,000 commissions will be notified if their work is selected for development. Details for the video proposals, submission criteria and other guidelines are online at arshtcenter.org/heart-art-submission. Artists with questions about submissions are encouraged to email [email protected].
